Instrument Gas Filter – Key Features
The filter consists of a housing with a suitably designed element. Vessel sizing is based on the required filtration area, flow rate, and maximum allowable pressure drop.
Selection of the element design depends on multiple parameters like viscosity, density, and degree of filtration.
The Instrument Gas Filter uses a simple cylindrical cartridge that rests inside the housing.
Cartridges are fixed to the candle holding plate via threading provided on the top cap of the cartridge.
Inline or offline connections are provided based on the process requirements.
Pressure gauges can be installed at inlet/outlet nozzles to monitor pressure drop across the system.
Vessels are fabricated in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1, and include lifting lugs, handles, legs, and other accessories as per the required mechanical and process conditions.
Cartridge filters are available for liquid applications up to 0.1 microns and for gas applications up to 0.01 microns.

The filter unit comprises of two filter chambers which are connected to each other by means of three-way ball valves. The liquid to be filtered enters through the inlet connection and passes through the specially engineered wedge wire element, with the flow being outside to inside. Solids larger than the selected micron spacing are either retained on the outside of the filter element or drop into the filter chamber sump. Duplex strainers are designed for use in fluid handling systems where the flow can’t be shut down for filter cleaning. The duplex filters ensure complete removal of any type of foreign particles from the system.
Principle
When one basket becomes full, the flow is switched to the other basket. The first basket is removed, cleaned, and replaced.
Working
The duplex strainer system usually consists of two separate strainer baskets housed in the unit. The system also contains a valve handle placed between the two baskets to divert the flow of liquid to one strainer while the other is being cleaned.
Operations
Basket strainers feature top removal of the filter screen. The screen is in the form of a basket with a lifting handle, so that all particulate captured and retained by the screen can be easily removed for disposal. They are intended for applications where large amounts of solid particulate are expected and where the clean-out will be frequent. Where fine filtration is required, the basket is replaced by cartridge filters. During cartridge cleaning or change-out, the housing can be cleaned by opening the lower plug.
Applications
Where continuous operation is required and the line cannot be shut down for cleaning, duplex basket strainers can be used. Suitable for applications where continuous filtration is absolutely necessary.

In tee type strainer, a structural skeleton made of flats and round bar is often used to support the wire mesh. Tee Type Strainers are a low-cost solution to large nominal bore straining requirements. They feature either bolted covers or quick-opening covers based on application suitability.
